What is WAN?
The Women's Aquatic Network is a private, non-profit organization incorporated in 1985 in the District of Columbia. It is lead and organized by women but its membership is open to women and men. Its mission is to bring together professionals with interests in marine, coastal and aquatic policy, research, management, legislation, and other areas. WAN members are scientists, lawyers, policy-makers, natural resource managers, entrepreneurs, environmental advocates, students, professors and from many other professions.
The purpose of WAN is to:
- Facilitate the interaction of women and men with interests in marine and aquatic affairs in an atmosphere that encourages information exchange
- Promote the role of women in marine, coastal and aquatic affairs
- Identify individuals, groups, organizations, programs, and/or employment opportunities that could benefit members in their field(s) of interest and expertise; and
- Provide a forum for discussion of topical issues in marine and aquatic affairs.
What do we do?
- WAN organizes many interesting networking events every year. We try to host one event per quarter and always welcome ideas for best ways to facilitate exchange of information between our members and leaders in the field.
- WAN activities include Washington, DC-area luncheons or evening meetings with speakers on current topics of interest. We also host an annual spring lecture to honor the late Dr. Nancy Foster, a noted conservationist, oceanographer, NOAA leader, and dedicated member of WAN.
- WAN maintains an active and growing listserve to help inform our members of area events related to marine, coastal or aquatic affairs. This year we hope to return to posting relevant job announcement or other career advancement opportunities.
- WAN’s new and improved website also serves to inform our membership of upcoming events, developments in federal marine and aquatic related legislation, and networking opportunities. Our website also provides you with a calendar of upcoming meetings and relevant conferences.
