Past Events
To get a flavor of the sort of events that WAN organizes, read on to see what we’ve been up to in 2008!
Potomac Twilight Cruise – October 1, 2008
WAN members and alumni mingled and networked aboard the classy motoryacht Finished Business as it plied the waters of the Potomac River at twilight. Participants enjoyed watching the sun set over the cityscape of DC and the impressive Washington monuments and well lit memorials emerge. A short program focused on the history of WAN’s founding and thoughts about the future of the organization with short talks presented by WAN co-founder Helen Brohl, board alumus Nancy Daves, and current President, Monika Thiele.
Women’s Leadership Forum – July 14, 2008
To explore how the role of women in ocean and coastal issues has changed since the founding of WAN twenty four years ago, WAN brought together current and future leaders in the field for a forum entitled Women Leadership in Marine Conservation, held at the famed Hall of States looking out at the U.S. Capitol. The panel consisted of Mary Glackin, Deputy Undersecretary of NOAA, Vikki Spruill, President and CEO of the Ocean Conservancy, and Kristen Fletcher, Executive Director of the Coastal States Organization and President of the Coastal Society. The panelists discussed their career paths, described how gender played a role in their success, and offered practical suggestions for aspiring leaders.
WAN Officers and Alumni Officers Board Meeting – April 29, 2008
Former WAN officers Helen Brohl, with the Executive Secretariat Committee on the Marine Transportation System, Lynne Mersfelder-Lewis, with NOAA’s National Ocean Service, and Becky Rootes, from NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service, met with current WAN officers at a special board meeting to provide historical perspective on WAN, help ensure continuity of mission, and to make suggestions for the future direction of the organization.
Toast to the Ocean Happy Hour – April 22, 2008
WAN members gathered together to celebrate oceans and coasts on Earth Day 2008. Amid the science-themed décor of the Science Club in Dupont Circle, we raised our glasses in toast to our 2008 successes in ocean and coastal protection. We celebrated the formal designation of the largest marine protected area in the United States, the Papahanmokuakea National Monument, among other noteworthy successes shared by WAN members around the room.
Welcome to DC Fellows Event - March 2008
WAN hosted a warm welcome happy hour event to meet and great the new 2008 Knauss Sea Grant Fellows, Presidential Management Fellows, and AAAS Fellows.
